Decorating My College Bound Teen's Small Space with #AtHomeStores

This is Evan. Today is his birthday, and is just about ready to go to college. He has one more year of sharing a room with his brother, but neither one can wait for the transition. In this video, he talks about his goals for personalizing his space.

In light of recent events, celebrating my oldest son’s birthday is hard, but not in the way that I expected it to be. He is my first kid, my baby boy, and I get nostalgic on birthdays. I remember how much I loved his little feet, and how we called him "happy head" because when he'd smile, his whole head seemed to smile. Celebrating his life, when there had been so much loss on and around his birthday was difficult.  I’m happy my son will see another year, sad that other mothers' sons won't. Evan is the one who would be giving extra graham crackers to kids at lunch time like Philando Castile. I can't imagine what these moms are feeling.

As we sang and danced in the car, he says, “This doesn’t feel right – singing and dancing and having fun while people are dying.” I think my husband said it best when he said that now there's even more of a reason to celebrate life and to be happy. When someone wants to steal from you, you protect what’s yours. When the world is trying its best to steal your happiness, you guard that, you cherish that, you protect it with everything you have.  Evan deserves to enjoy his birthday, just like those who won’t live to see theirs.

I LURVE the beach. Every summer I end up on many beaches, but most of the time, I still feel self conscious. You know when you get out on the beach and you see people who put on their swimwear and rock it like they just don’t care? Big and tall, pudgy, thick, belly bare - don’t care… those types of people fascinate me. They really do. I wonder where they get that confidence from, and how I can get a big cup of it.

Even at 100 pounds, I was trying to cover things. I had no jiggly bits, but I still felt some kind of way about my body.  Now that I actually have things that overflow my clothing, I’m wondering what on earth I was covering up.

Well, this summer, I’m not trying to miss out on all the fun sitting under some umbrella or half drowning trying to wear a sarong. I plan to be like these women who just let it all hang out… but… okay wait… not ALL of mine will be hanging out.  I’ve found the cutest suits that will keep some of it in. For under $25! Guess who’s ditching the sarong and still feeling fabulous in these tropical print retro high waisted styles? Me.  Click on the images to check them out. Be sure to check the size chart before you buy. Not ready to buy? Pin it for later!

Three Things I Learned at the Nicole and Madeline Photoshoot

I could run... sorta... I mean those heels were ridiculous under that skirt... but I couldn't hide. Even though I tried.

That’s me. That’s me? That. Is. Me.

I had a whole range of thoughts and emotions during this photoshoot with my friend Rae. Now you guys know Rae as that super down to earth, friendly, but straightforward friend that everybody wants to have tea and patty melts with. She is also a really talented photographer who takes photos that make you feel things.  I’m no art critic, so that is the best way I can describe it.

I had an idea for a skirt, and told my super talented cousin about it. Socamom readers know her as Chef Cherry… you have been drooling over videos and instagram pics that I have taken over the years.  What you probably don’t know is that she has another talent that is actually what she does full time.  She is an amazing designer.

Rae loves a candid photo. She documented pretty much every moment with this skirt.

She’d remind me about it from time to time, and with school and homeschool, and the kids, I just never got back over there. Well I went over – but with food on my mind, not fashion. One day I got a call, telling me to come over and try on the skirt – and bring my boots.  I’m all like – what skirt?  I went over and slid into this gorgeous massive creation. When I tell you that what I had in my mind was there… on my body… and then again it wasn’t. It was more. It was more than I ever figured.  It was no longer a general idea floating around in my head.  She had created much more than I could have imagined or envisioned.  I was floored.
