Even with social media giving us every opportunity to show off our accomplishments, many Caribbean women still feel like they can’t\u00a0cheer for themselves.<\/strong> You can have pride in your country, your children\u2019s achievements, your team’s wins, your husband and other family members when they do well, but pride in yourself? Not really.\u00a0So we hope and pray and wait for validation from others. We wait on people to toot our horn for us.\u00a0 Problem is \u2013 how on earth do you let people know you have a horn to toot \u2013 so they can toot it for you – if you can\u2019t tell people the amazing thing you\u2019ve accomplished?\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a catch 22 if I ever saw one.<\/strong> \u00a0Also, my kids would be proud at the number of times I worked \u201ctoot\u201d into that paragraph.<\/p>\n

You have to be humble… wait for your rewards in heaven… God knows what you did… Well. All of this is true, but these days, you get more work based on what you have done. If you don’t tell people what you have done… no work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I had no intention of going to BlogHer, and somehow, tomorrow, I\u2019ll be on a plane to Los Angeles.\u00a0 I had decided that I was going to 2, maybe three conferences this year.\u00a0 Since law school, I have been able to squeeze in 2 per year \u2013 one in the summer and one in the fall. But then the email came\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I think I read it about 10 times before I told my husband over Google hangout (that\u2019s the new name for their text chat too).<\/strong>\u00a0 I had to make sure that it was addressed to me. I clicked on the link to be sure that they had picked my video for real. It was mine.\u00a0 I read it again.\u00a0 They said we couldn\u2019t tell anyone until they announced it. WHAAAAATTTT? Read it again\u2026 \u201cpublicly.\u201d Oh\u2026 gotcha. Well, my husband \u00a0isn\u2019t on social media, other than LinkedIn, so I figured he wouldn\u2019t really know what I was talking about, but if nothing else, he\u2019d be happy because I was happy.<\/p>\n

I had been selected as a 2016 Voices of the Year Honoree AND I would be presenting my selection on the stage during the Community Keynote… AND Aisha Tyler would be the emcee.\u00a0<\/strong>Yes. This was happening.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I keep checking here <\/a>to be sure that they really mean it. I’m really doing this. They were sure, and typed it and published it on the Internet where everything is true, so this is true too.*<\/em><\/p>\n

You know those times in your life when things go well, and you are really careful about who you tell so they don\u2019t ruin it for you?<\/strong> This was one of those times.\u00a0 First up? The husband. Next? The kids\u2026. They ran downstairs yelling and screaming and cheering. Only the oldest stopped after a few minutes and asked what we were all cheering for. I told him, and the happy dancing resumed. I still don\u2019t think they have any idea what is happening.<\/p>\n

Then I told the friends and family that I talk to every day.<\/strong> They were hype for me too.\u00a0 Then\u2026 I did what everyone else did\u2026 the minute BlogHer announced the honorees, I told the world on social media – that included family and friends who would be given the option to be happy or not.\u00a0 They could click like, or love, comment, or just scroll by it and say nothing.\u00a0 Any of those would be cool to be honest. None of the platforms I\u2019m on have a \u201cdislike\u201d or \u201cthumbs down\u201d really, so unless my news made them angry, sad, or amused \u2013 they could like it, love it, congratulate me, or keep it pushing. There were a lot of “congratulations,” and that felt pretty awesome – can’t lie.<\/p>\n

My dad isn\u2019t on social media either.<\/strong>\u00a0[UPDATE: He just added me to his circle on Google+… pop your collar dad!] I didn\u2019t figure he\u2019d get it so I decided I\u2019d tell him a day or two before I left.\u00a0 He called me in the middle of the day the week before last. Now you know \u2013 when a parent calls you at like 12 in the afternoon, you pick up. \u00a0He was just checking on me \u2013 nothing urgent, but I decided to tell him then. I fully expected to have to explain the whole thing to him, which I really didn\u2019t want to do.\u00a0 Not that he doesn\u2019t deserve a full explanation, but I know my dad. He doesn\u2019t have time for all that. I think I got it down to one sentence. \u201cI\u2019m going to Los Angeles in a couple of weeks to show a video I made and accept an award.\u201d Something like that.<\/p>\n

He paused \u2013 presumably to make sure that I heard every word he was about to say<\/strong>. He said that he was proud of me, and that there was a light inside of me that draws people to me and to the work that I do. He told me that I \u201ctry so hard,\u201d and that he \u201calways knew I\u2019d do great things.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know how to respond. I said \u201cthank you,\u201d but I really wanted to just curl up on the floor in the fetal position and cry.\u00a0I didn\u2019t though.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We talked about my upcoming graduation, and how happy he was that I would be doing something that I always wanted to do AND graduating from his alma mater!<\/strong> He was so excited, that I wished I had told him about being a Voices of the Year Honoree earlier.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t talk about me being a late bloomer, or mention what I didn\u2019t do.<\/strong> He didn\u2019t mention what I could have done better or different \u2013 he was actually truly happy for me. It probably wouldn\u2019t have mattered what I said really.\u00a0 He\u2019d have been pleased.\u00a0 At the end of the day, that\u2019s all we really want.\u00a0 We want to hear that something we did was good.<\/p>\n
