It is meant to be&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So this is a blog, right? Not CNN or NBC or ABC. You guys are here for my real feelings and what really happened, so here goes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ewgEtaZRExw?modestbranding=1&amp;;showinfo=0&amp;;autohide=1&amp;;rel=0&amp;;hd=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I had gone to the convention center bright and early that morning to get my badge, look around, peek into some sessions, and then I had to leave to go to class. After class, I had every intention of going back to the conference, but my body was like\u2026 nope. \u00a0I had been feeling terrible several days prior, and that day was the height of blah.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a cold \u2013 no cough or anything \u2013 just feeling generally awful.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to go home and rest a bit, while constantly refreshing my inbox to see if the authorization had come through to cover the event.<strong> Nothing. Refresh. Nothing. Refresh. Nada. Refresh. Nope.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When the time came for press check in, I just went for it.<\/strong> I threw some makeup on my face to counteract the whole \u201czombie-mom\u201d look I had going on, \u00a0got my camera, dragged myself to the minivan, and headed to downtown DC. I said you know what? This is a huge event, what if they just didn\u2019t have time to send out approvals \u2013 it happens. I parked at the convention center and walked about \u00be of a mile to the venue. Now\u2026 I told you I felt like $#%t right? Right. So by the time I got there? I felt like that, but warmed over.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I texted my husband that if I wasn\u2019t approved I\u2019d be home shortly.<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t mad. I was just over everything. Walking\u2026 standing\u2026 keeping my eyes open\u2026. It was only 6, but yes. Over it.\u00a0 I signed in and started to pray.\u00a0 There were a lot of people there, and everyone was decked out with big fancy cameras with amazing lenses and flashes that would no doubt get the best photos. I looked at my little old camera bag\u2026 *shrug* To pooped to be envious.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I texted my husband again, that I would be totally fine with not getting in and honestly I needed him to come get me before I passed out.<\/strong> Then I text:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Here and signed in, but as usual, never a guarantee with a small outlet. Pray for me\u2026 to either get in and be fine til 10 or be turned away and get rest\u2026 His will be done\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Right after I sent that text, the CEO of the PR company says, \u201cWho has signed in and is taking still photos?\u201d I raised my hand. She tapped six of us to be escorted upstairs.<strong> His will. Done.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I got upstairs, there were a few photographers already up there, so I promptly began eavesdropping. <strong>Associated Press. TV One. What was I doing here? God knew.<\/strong> Someone says, \u201cdon\u2019t lock your knees\u2026 I don\u2019t do mouth to mouth.\u201d I felt like that was meant for me. I unlocked my knees and started listening to instructions.\u00a0 \u201cNo flash for Ms. Tyson.\u201d Um. Wha? You see this little camera?\u00a0 Ok. This is going badly\u2026 I see it coming. Everyone with their fancy flashes and lenses groaned, and chatter about \u201cfixing it in post\u201d started circulating. I did. Not on her or anything \u2013 I do have some sort of decorum \u2013 but I did squeal a little on Facebook and Twitter.<\/strong> Listen. That woman\u2026 she is just gorgeous. Those pics you see of her online? Not airbrushed. Face? Flawless. Legs? Flawless. Voice? Real heels \u2013 not kitten heels\u2026 not wedges\u2026 real heels.<\/strong> I looked down at my own aching feet in flats and thought about the fact that she is 91. What is my\u00a0excuse. I have none. I mean, I\u2019m no superstar or anything, but if she can get fly and come out to bless the people at 91, more than twice my age, I could at least try.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of people didn\u2019t get the memo on the flash, but other than that? Silence. People were in awe and I don\u2019t blame them. She was just gorgeous. The thirty seconds she gave us? Felt like a glorious eternity. Just radiant. After she left? So did just about everyone else. We all \u00a0filed into the theater, and then I found out why I was there. When you say, \u201cthy will be done,\u201d you better mean it. He\u2019s gonna give it to you.<\/p>\n<p>So whenever I fill out a media request, I try to put myself into the mind of the person approving such requests\u2026. \u201cCaribbean Parenting Blogger\u201d what on earth does THAT have to do with THIS?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then moments like this happen, and you try not to fall out or jump up and shout\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ewgEtaZRExw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Click here to see video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you skipped the video \u2013 which is fine, I\u2019ve watched it enough times for all of us &#8211; Cicely Tyson talked about her Caribbean mom\u2026 WITH the accent.<\/strong> I could not. I cannot. I am still not over it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The whole point of this blog is for those of us who are Caribbean moms, Caribbean American moms, folks who have Caribbean moms, aunties, and grandmothers, to talk about our shared experiences.<\/strong> His will was done. I\u2019ve lost my father, my mother, my sister, my brother. It\u2019s interesting to me because I was the frailest of the three children. Not supposed to survive after three years. And I wondered a lot over the fact that my mother\u2026 just drove me crazy. Because I could not move without her saying, \u201cdon\u2019t do that, don\u2019t do this, don\u2019t do the other, don\u2019t go there\u2026\u201d I was always the one\u2026. The minute she said \u201cdon\u2019t\u201d that was my cue to \u201cdo.\u201d And so I was the bane of her entire existence. I was always breaking this, that, or the other. I got to the point where I began to think that my mother was an absolute witch. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because she said to me &#8211; I had the chicken pox &#8211; I remember this so well&#8230; I had the chicken pox and I had just gotten over it, and I was going back to school for the first time. As I opened the door to exit, she said, [in accent] \u201cYou. Come Here. When you go down de steps, hold ahn to de bannistah.\u201d I\u2019m looking at this woman like she\u2019s stark raving mad. I don\u2019t have to hold on to no bannister\u2026 I know how to go down the steps. Well. I didn\u2019t hold onto the bannister, and I ended [up] down on the floor\u2026 And every time she would say something to me like that, it would happen.<\/p>\n<p>My mother told all three of us \u2013 I had a brother and a sister \u2013 that <strong>one day she was walking down the street, pushing me in a baby carriage, and a woman stopped her and said, \u201ctake care of that child\u2026<\/strong> she has a sixth sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cShe\u2019s going to make you very proud one day, and she\u2019s going to take care of you in your old age.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I lost my mother, it was as if I had lost my right arm\u2026 although we could not get along. She swears I was like my father, I could see me in her. And so, when I lost her, I understood for the first time what amputees meant when they said that even though they lost a limb, they felt as though it was still there. And that\u2019s how I felt when I lost my mother. My sister said to me one day, she said,<strong> \u201cI don\u2019t know why you\u2019re grieving so<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if mama ever told you this, but she sure told me a lot,\u201d and she repeated the story. And she said to me, <strong>\u201cyou have done all that, so what more can you do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I simply said, \u201cI don\u2019t think that I could have done enough\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ewgEtaZRExw?modestbranding=1&amp;;showinfo=0&amp;;autohide=1&amp;;rel=0&amp;;hd=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time.
