It seems that every woman has a certain level of guilt that she has to deal with.\u00a0 No matter what the race, community, background, lifestyle, citizenship family structure, marital status \u2013 there\u2019s always some guilt related to that singular fact \u2013 she is a woman.\u00a0 The more facets there are to your life, the more titles after your name, the more guilt.<\/p>\n

As a mom, I have this constant stream of questions going through my head\u2026 most of the day.<\/p>\n

Do I have a vegetable planned for dinner?\u00a0 What are we even having for dinner?\u00a0 Will I have enough time to make dinner?\u00a0 Are the kids getting enough rest?\u00a0 Are they active enough? Do they have shoes for playing?\u00a0 Do they have dress shoes? Do their shoes fit?\u00a0 Is baby girl\u2019s hair still presentable?\u00a0 Did the boys get haircuts?\u00a0 Did they pack enough food for lunch?\u00a0 Do we have food for them to make lunch?\u00a0 Should I be getting up earlier to make lunch?\u00a0 Am I doing something wrong by making them pack lunch for themselves?\u00a0 Did I make the dental appointments?\u00a0 Are they supposed to go to the dentist twice for checkups or do the visits for other things like sealants count as visits?\u00a0 The list goes on and on. Twenty four hours worth of questions \u2013 yes \u2013 I even ask myself these questions in my sleep.\u00a0 I go to bed exhausted, and wake up in a panic, wondering if I got it all done yesterday, and if I will be able to do it all today.\u00a0 Not likely that the answer to either question is \u201cyes\u201d, and that\u2019s where the guilt comes in.\u00a0 Should I have been able to do it all?<\/p>\n

You would think that having the support of my husband, family, and friends would help lessen the feeling, but no \u2013 not really.\u00a0 I am grateful, but I still feel like I should have been able to do it all on my own.\u00a0 Sometimes admitting that I can\u2019t do it all and relying on someone else makes the guilt even worse.<\/p>\n

So what do we do?\u00a0 What can we do to lessen those guilty feelings?\u00a0 Here are three things that I do when it all seems like it is too much.<\/p>\n

My mom said that talking to yourself doesn\u2019t mean you are crazy, it is when you start answering yourself that there could be a problem.\u00a0 So first, I admit that I am a little\u2026 ahem\u2026 touched.<\/p>\n

Second, I answer those questions that I ask myself.\u00a0 Should I be getting up earlier to make lunch? No.\u00a0 No I shouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 If they can reach all those near impossible levels on video games, and weave intricate bracelets out of rubber bands, they can put peanut butter on some bread and put it in a bag.\u00a0 Are they getting enough rest? Probably.\u00a0 They are welcome to sleep in the car \u2013 since they aren\u2019t driving.\u00a0 Unless I am poking them with a sharp stick during hours that they should be sleeping or making them work the nightshift on a job, it isn\u2019t my fault if they are tired.\u00a0 They have plenty of opportunities to sleep.\u00a0 I welcome bedtime \u2013 if they choose to stay awake and giggle or tell stories? Not my problem.<\/p>\n

Third, I end each one of my answers with, \u201c\u2026and that\u2019s okay.\u201d\u00a0 Because you know what?\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 The kids are happy (for the most part), fed (something), and clean (enough) \u2026 and that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n
