He needed to get a pinch or something. You shouldn&#8217;t act like that in public, right mommy?&#8221; The other two didnt&#8217; say a word.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, not exactly.&#8221; I replied. &#8220;He couldn&#8217;t help it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>He looked at me like I had lost my mind. &#8220;I would be in trouble if I acted like that, right?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know what to tell him, but by now, all three were looking at me for answers. \u00a0My oldest knew the answer, but instead of butting in like he usually does, he stayed silent &#8211; like he wanted to see how I got out of this one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You would be in trouble, you are right. He is different, and some things that don&#8217;t make you upset, make him upset. It could be the lights in here, loud noises, or just having to leave the store. \u00a0You never know. \u00a0It is not our job to know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So why can&#8217;t I look?&#8221; asked Mr. Social.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is looking going to help?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, I just want to see,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Did it look like his parents were having a hard time getting him out of the store?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; says Mr. Social.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you are having a hard time doing something, do you want someone to stare at you while you do it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; he said &#8211; a little taken aback.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So you mind your business, and let them take care of theirs. \u00a0If you can hold a door or they ask you to help, do that. \u00a0Otherwise, you mind your own business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>By now I was getting annoyed.<\/strong> His questions were perfectly valid, but I felt unprepared to answer them. \u00a0I was annoyed that I didn&#8217;t have time to prepare a more eloquent, sensitive, educated reply.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the day, I was able to think about it, and I brought the kids in to have a chat. \u00a0I asked them if they knew what &#8220;special needs&#8221; meant. \u00a0The youngest two didn&#8217;t. \u00a0I proceeded to explain that no two people are alike. I told them that if everyone in the world was the same, it would be a pretty boring place to live.\u00a0Some people learn faster than others, some run faster than others&#8230; and some people will never walk the way that they do. <strong>I talked to them about their <a href=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dad_in_paper_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Dad in the Aiken Standard October 2006 - Man Hopes to Inspire Others, Jim Greene stays fit despite having debilitating disease\" rel=\"noopener\">grandpa (has ankylosing spondylitis), <\/a>who I only remember with a cane &#8211; and now the kids only know him with crutches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dad_in_the_paper.pdf\" title=\"Newspaper Article on my dad and his disability - Socamom\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2377\" src=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/james_greene_socamom.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Newspaper Article on my dad and his disability\" title=\"Newspaper Article on my dad and his disability\" width=\"450\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/james_greene_socamom.png 450w, https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/james_greene_socamom-416x207.png 416w, https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/james_greene_socamom-300x149.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do you feel sorry for Grandpa?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Noooooo!&#8221; they all said &#8211; and looked at me like they were confused. \u00a0The youngest says, <a href=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dad_in_the_paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Dad in the Aiken Standard June 1998 - Attorney Keeps His Chin Up Despite Ailments\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;he has muscles that are as big as your HEAD!&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Does he walk like everyone else?&#8221; I asked.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I guess not,&#8221; says the Mr. Social.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Would you want people staring at him when you guys are hanging out?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The oldest one looked like a flash of anger came over him. \u00a0None of them answered. The oldest frowned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course you wouldn&#8217;t. \u00a0You love him &#8211; he is your grandpa &#8211; no matter how he gets around. \u00a0I want you to think about that when you see someone who looks different from you, walks different, talks different, or has a harder time doing things that you think are easy. \u00a0If you wouldn&#8217;t want them staring at you and
