{"id":2726,"date":"2012-09-01T14:00:58","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T14:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/homeschooling-my-teenager-it-starts-with-a-plan\/"},"modified":"2023-09-04T20:42:59","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T02:42:59","slug":"homeschooling-my-teenager-it-starts-with-a-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/homeschooling-my-teenager-it-starts-with-a-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Homeschooling My Teenager: It Starts with a Plan&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This year at the <a href=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/?p=2666\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Sponsor SocaMom at The 2 to 1 Conference\" rel=\"noopener\">2 to 1 Conference<\/a>, I went to a session about homeschooling a high schooler. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2725\" src=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/teen_socamom.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/teen_socamom.jpg 400w, https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/teen_socamom-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was really inspirational, and I felt prepared to deal with my soon to be teen when I got home.\u00a0 Almost.\u00a0 I was a mess as a teenager.\u00a0 What I didn\u2019t do \u2013 didn\u2019t exist for the most part.\u00a0 I still shudder to think of the things I got away with.\u00a0 Apparently payback is a\u2026 well\u2026 let\u2019s just say there\u2019s payback.\u00a0 The only difference is that I am with my teen every day all day, and I was with my parents just long enough to ask them for some money and the car keys, so I can\u2019t compare my experience as a teenager to his.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I really don\u2019t believe that parents are meant to know EVERYTHING their teen does.<\/strong> We need to know enough to make sure they don\u2019t harm themselves or the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a family, we focus on making sure he doesn\u2019t harm himself&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Physically<\/strong> \u2013 that includes protective gear for sports, teaching him how to kitchen appliances and utensils, the iron, and trying to manage that overall teen awkwardness\/clumsiness that could lead to falling down\u2026 a lot. I swear sometimes they are like baby deer learning to walk all over again.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emotionally<\/strong> \u2013 he is so curious about everything these days, but some things he isn\u2019t ready to know about or see, even though he thinks he is.\u00a0 It is tough to monitor all the movies he watches and books he reads, since he does visit friends and family sometimes, but we try to steer him in the right direction.\u00a0 If he does have an experience that is less than age appropriate, we try to help him work through what he doesn\u2019t understand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spiritually<\/strong> \u2013 yesterday, he asked me why the church in the Middle ages was so opposed to science.\u00a0 He is a science and history fanatic, so his questions as we go through both subjects are becoming deeper and more complex.\u00a0 I am glad that I am here to answer those questions according to the faith of our family.\u00a0 That is one of the cool things about homeschooling \u2013 I get to be there to answer the questions before his teen brain comes up with its own reasoning based on the hormones and other strange influences that parents just don\u2019t understand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We monitor his impact on the community by&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><br \/>Making sure that he knows that foul language is inappropriate, and always inappropriate when in front of young children and when directed at adults. <\/strong> He prides himself on being creative.\u00a0 I told him that he can also be creative with his words too.\u00a0 Instead of adding random expletives onto the ends of sentences or just add \u2013ing or \u2013ed to make a word more \u201ccolorful\u201d, he should work on finding actual adjectives or adverbs to help him get his point across.\u00a0 I am not at all of the belief that my baby boy will never cuss \u2013 but I want him to know that he has options.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Insisting that trash goes in the trash can \u2013 at home, and outside.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Sharing with him that volunteering and giving inside and outside of the home is important.\u00a0 Often times he will ask me, \u201care you getting paid to do this?\u201d\u00a0 I tell him no, and he looks confused. \u201cSo why are you doing it?\u201d I tell him that not everything he does will have a dollar value attached to it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t pay for chores \u2013 those he just has to do as part of a household \u2013 but if he helps the hubby set up a printer, helps me with a blog post, or sells his own stuff at a community yard sale, he can earn his own money.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Encouraging non-violent conflict resolution. <\/strong>In other words \u2013 no fighting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Making sure that he is educated. <\/strong>He can use his education to make a positive impact on the community of which he chooses to be a part.\u00a0 Recently, a teen in Maryland came up with a new test for pancreatic cancer that will affect thousands of families that are susceptible to the disease.\u00a0 We want to keep him curious, focused, and interested in \u201cconnecting the dots\u201d between science, math, literature, history, and language, so that he can contribute to the society at large.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>I have no intention of trying to know EVERY single thing that my teen does. <\/strong> Just a few days into homeschooling one, I am pretty sure I have a trying year ahead of me.\u00a0 So if I can keep him safe, focused on school work, busy with sports and peer activities, and tired from chores and volunteering, this first year homeschooling my teenager just might work out fine&#8230;
