{"id":2927,"date":"2019-02-08T23:02:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T23:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/?p=2927"},"modified":"2023-09-04T22:26:23","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T04:26:23","slug":"kids-and-soca-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/kids-and-soca-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Too Young to Soca: Kids and Soca Music&#8230; Do They Mix?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This was originally posted in October of 2011. &nbsp;Not much has changed &#8211; still can&#8217;t let my kids watch 99.99% of Caribbean music videos &#8211; no matter what genre! &nbsp;If you know of good, child friendly soca, reggae, dancehall, and other Caribbean music, please share it in the comments section. We&#8217;d love to hear about it!<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so Soca isn&#8217;t the most child-friendly genre of music.<\/p>\n<p>I want to <a href=\"http:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/6-ways-to-connect-to-caribbean-culture-on-your-resort-vacation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keep my kids connected to Caribbean culture <\/a>and the music that I grew up with even though I lived in the US.&nbsp; When they listen to the music, they don\u2019t understand much, but I do.&nbsp; I understand that <strong>MOST of the current, popular songs are about sex.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So I decided to go back to the songs that I grew up listening to\u2026 um\u2026 looks like lots of those were about sex too.&nbsp; So I said, okay, I guess I need to go all the way back to Calypso\u2026 wow\u2026 some of those too!&nbsp; Granted, most of the songs from the 70\u2019s, 80\u2019s, and 90\u2019s are less overtly sexual, and use a lot of hidden messages and double entendre \u2013 but it is still there, and <strong>my kids are good at decoding whatever I don&#8217;t want them to.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a few songs that I have found that are fun for the kids to dance to, and have reasonable lyrics, but when I load them up on Pandora or Rhapsody \u2013 <strong>the album covers are insane!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have to hurry up and minimize the screen or keep my phone on the home screen so that the kids don\u2019t see it.&nbsp; I am not a full on prude, but seriously, some just have naked women\u2026 that\u2019s it.&nbsp; And THAT is not a recent thing.&nbsp; Some of the explicit covers date back over 25 years!<\/p>\n<p>I have a few current favorite artists from whom I can get some good, reasonably clean music that the kids and I can dance to after dinner.&nbsp; I don\u2019t necessarily let them watch the videos, but I can\u2019t have EVERYTHING, can I?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YLoUPMwPhcM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&nbsp;have created a few kid friendly playlists for the Youtube channel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLbWnuot4UOOLiw3XZBFllt-vJq7E_C7qp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>FAMILY FRIENDLY CARIBBEAN TUNES PLAYLIST<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Feel free to suggest more in the comments. <strong>Do you let your kids listen to soca?&nbsp; What clean(ish) songs are in your playlist, that your kids love?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was originally posted in October of 2011. &nbsp;Not much has changed &#8211; still can&#8217;t let my kids watch 99.99% of Caribbean music videos &#8211; no matter what genre! &nbsp;If you know of good, child friendly soca, reggae, dancehall, and&hellip;<\/p>\n<div class=\"link-more\"><a href=\"https:\/\/socamom.com\/w\/kids-and-soca-music\/#more-2927\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading &#10142; <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Too Young to Soca: Kids and Soca Music&#8230; Do They Mix?<\/span><\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4361,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":true,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,30,147],"tags":[230,229,231,207],"class_list":["post-2927","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-music","category-parenting-blog","category-soca","tag-kids","tag-music","tag-parenting","tag-soca","blog_design-has-thumbnail"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Too Young to Soca: Kids and Soca Music...
