One day, I came in from teaching at the kids’ summer camp, and went straight to the kitchen. <\/strong>Dinner was on the table by 5:15 – peas, baked fish, and mac’ n’ cheese. I was late. \u00a0Only two out of the three children had bathed (the last one turned off the water when he heard the call for dinner), and I NEED them to be in bed by 8.<\/p>\n

It’s 9:20 – I just watched the kids do high kicks in the living room while screaming, “Hi-Yaaaah!”<\/strong> Hubby has gone back out to the grocery store for allergy friendly snack foods, and well – I’m the only one left to watch the show. So be it.<\/p>\n

Now that the show is over, I get to sit and write this blog post.<\/strong> People are always asking me what my day is like, and how I do it all. \u00a0Truth is, I don’t. \u00a0Even with dinner on the table NEAR 5, I don’t have the slightest chance of getting all of the business done in a day that I would like to do. \u00a0Writers are supposed to write every day. \u00a0Well, without having my cell phone today, I wasn’t able to write 140 characters on Twitter, let alone 140 words.<\/span><\/p>\n

So really, what is my business day like?<\/strong> The only thing that is the same every day is that I get up about 5 or 5:30. \u00a0I make sure that the kids’ clothes for camp are dry (we have to wash camp clothes daily), and I check email. \u00a0Creating relaxes me, so sometimes I’ll make a coloring or activity sheet for the activity page section of SocaMom.com<\/a>, or illustrate a part of a page for my upcoming picture book. \u00a0I’ll check the sales on the paperback version\u00a0Anancy’s Family Reunion<\/a>, and set up the necessary shipping, then check the ebook<\/a> sales, just because I want to know how it’s doing.<\/p>\n

In the summer, my kids are my business from 7 in the morning to 3:30 – at least – so I do stuff with them.<\/strong> We go places, make things, go to camp… all that good summer with mom stuff. Then if all goes well, I go to the post office to mail blog and business related stuff like payroll and such. \u00a0The kids like to help with that. \u00a0Around 4:30, I’m on a mission – dinner by 5. \u00a0If I have dinner done by 5, and kids clean and ready to sleep by 8, by 9, I can get back to business, write my blog posts (maybe even a few extra scheduled posts, return emails, promote my upcoming projects, do some planning, and if it’s a Wednesday, jump on Google Hangout with the Stepsisters and do our video show.<\/p>\n

My business day isn’t as hectic as it could be.<\/strong> At the end of the day, my main business is being a wife and mom, and that means dinner on the table by 5… whether I made it or not. That’s what keeps me sane. \u00a0I know that being mom and wife is my priority, but being able to create and make that my business has always been a part of who I am. It makes me happy. \u00a0My happiness is important too, so in order to have those hours in the evening spent blogging and planning, kids fed by 5, asleep (or close) by 8.<\/p>\n
