This time of the year always gets me down – not particularly because it’s\u00a0winter or that we’re in between holidays. It’s because over the weekend and\u00a0for the next couple of days there are millions of people getting on bad!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, its carnival season, and while those of us on the East coast try not to\u00a0get stranded in the snow, a bunch of feathers, sequins, masks and banners\u00a0are being paraded in over 10 countries around the world…<\/strong><\/p>\n

F\u00eaters in Brazil, Bolivia, India, Italy, Aruba, Panama, the Canary Islands,\u00a0Haiti, Dominica and of course Trinidad are reveling in the music, costumes,\u00a0culture and expression of freedom that is carnival. They’re even doing it\u00a0in New Orleans for Mardi Gras!<\/p>\n

After a few years of sulking whenever carnival season came around, and\u00a0blocking posts and pics from friends in Trinidad, I decided to be part of\u00a0the fun instead by celebrating ‘Carnival in Winter.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sounds crazy I know, but bear with me. ‘If you’re not lucky enough to\u00a0travel to one of these amazing carnivals, why not bring the carnival to\u00a0you?’ I thought.<\/p>\n

Of course, it’s not the same as being there but think about it this way –\u00a0there’s no expensive airline tickets, no unbearable heat and no crowds of\u00a0scantily clad females making you wish you hadn’t eaten that last tamarind\u00a0ball.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interested? Well, here are a few examples of ways my family does ‘Carnival\u00a0in Winter’:
<\/strong>
– Play nothing but Soca\/Calypso<\/strong>, Samba, Zouk, Chutney (any kind of music\u00a0that’s lively and infectious) the whole weekend.<\/p>\n

– Have your own parade or play mas <\/strong>using the kid’s costumes or old\u00a0clothes you had planned to donate years ago. You can march and dance around\u00a0the house waving flags or bandanas and have someone judge the winners.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

– Have a carnival story time.<\/strong> You can find books about carnival at your\u00a0local library or on Amazon (used copies are way cheaper and sometimes still\u00a0in good condition). Our favorite is *’Jump Up Time: A Trinidad Carnival\u00a0Story’* by Lyn Joseph.

– Leading up to carnival season take part in the Black History month\u00a0activities in your neighborhood. <\/strong>You may find a great African dance\u00a0performance or storytelling session. If you live in a particularly diverse\u00a0area, search for carnival-related activities to attend.<\/p>\n

– Do some Carnival arts and crafts.<\/strong> We always get the best ideas from this\u00a0very website! Check out our fantastic posts on carnival\u00a0face-painting, carnival headpiecesand the Caribbean coloring sheets and\u00a0downloads.<\/p>\n

– Another craft idea is to become a stilt walker or moko jumbie by\u00a0creating tin can stilts for your kids.<\/strong> You’ll need coffee or paint cans and\u00a0sturdy string. (We’ve haven’t tried this one yet because we could never\u00a0find cans big enough!) Check out Pinterest for directions.<\/p>\n
