You know the drill. <\/strong>You\u2019ve been on a long trip consisting of multiple arrivals and departures. You consider it a win if you just didn\u2019t drop the last clean pacifier, or lose your little one\u2019s num num (blanket, bunny, insert \u201ccan\u2019t exist without it\u201d item here) between flights. As you drag yourself, your bags, and your offspring off of the plane to baggage claim, a couple approaches you and tells you that they have been watching you and your kids, and how wonderful it was to be on a flight with such well behaved children. You breathe a sigh of relief and a \u201cthank you\u201d that doesn\u2019t sound half as grateful for the compliment as you wanted to sound, and limp on to customs. Or maybe you don\u2019t know the drill.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maybe you have the kids that can tear a plane UP and make passengers wish that they had a pilot\u2019s license so that they would never have to fly with your children again\u2026 or any children for that matter. Maybe your kids are the ones incessantly kicking the seats in front of them, or dangling themselves over the back of their seats, staring at, or worse, talking to the passengers behind them\u2026 sharing your age, details about your dating life, or even better, where babies come from. Is your baby the one who just screams for no reason, falls asleep, then wakes up screaming just as the other passengers, and you, have drifted off to sleep?<\/p>\n

My parents were having no in-flight foolishness.<\/strong> They packed food, blankets, and made sure we stayed occupied. Other than that? Threats. I don’t remember verbal threats, but threatening looks? Plenty. Today, we can’t (and don’t have to) rely solely on “the look.”<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t all get it right the first time.<\/strong> At one time or another we\u2019ve probably all had that kid that we\u2019ve had to apologize for. One of the missions of this blog when I started it five years ago, was to share some of that West Indian mom knowledge that can seem to elusive for those of us raising children outside of the Caribbean. “I’m nervous about taking [the kids] into an enclosed space for 4.5 hours when we travel to Grenada this summer. This is their very first flight. I’m hoping it will be early in the morning so that they sleep the whole way, or that the coloring books and DVD player I plan to bring will keep them entertained. We are here to help! Traveling like a Caribbean Mom is all about being prepared. <\/strong>I have asked some of the most amazing Caribbean moms to give their best tips and tricks for fuss free, peaceful travel with your kiddos, no matter where you\u2019re from.<\/p>\n

Infants and Toddlers<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the sure fire things to get a little one screaming on a flight is ear pain because of the pressure changes.<\/strong> Infants and toddlers don\u2019t understand when you tell them to swallow so that it won\u2019t hurt, and are too young for gum. Make sure to have something on hand that that will make them swallow. Consider pacifiers, bottles (check current TSA guidelines for liquids), breastfeeding, sippy cups, sugar free lollipops (with close supervision), or their favorite toddler cookies. Bring plenty in case of flinging, dropping, etc. If you use something tasty or comforting, they are not as likely to opt for screaming. If they usually have a hard time adjusting to the changes, ask your pediatrician about using an over the counter pain reliever before boarding.<\/p>\n

NEW TOYS\/OLD TOYS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bring a couple old, familiar toys for comfort – planes can be noisy and scary, and some new ones that could grab their interest.<\/strong> Babies can actually get bored. Bored babies can get cranky. Don\u2019t forget to pack small, washable toys to keep them occupied. For some reason, toddler toys can be very noisy and disturb other passengers. Sensory books with different textures, and paper and crayons for little hands can also be a quiet alternative to the usual beeping, talking, clanging toys made for toddlers.<\/p>\n

MINE!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Traveling with multiple kids? That \u201cMINE\u201d shriek is quite possibly your fellow passenger\u2019s least favorite utterance ever.<\/strong> This is the one time that you may want to preempt the arguments, and invest in identical toys, books, and snacks. It will be worth it.<\/p>\n

“Have a snack bag handy with snacks that your kids like to eat. I like to keep snack packs of pretzels and goldfish handy. Cheerios are also good. “Our most recent trip to Jamaica was March 2014 when Ethan was almost 3. This wasn\u2019t his first flight but as he gets older I anticipated he\u2019d be more active and restless. Before we got on the plane we talked about what\u2019s going to happen – that we will all sit down with seat belts “so we can be safe\u201d (Thanks Dora!) We allowed him to still move around until the flight attendants did the last check because at 2\/3 sitting in a seat for 3+ hours is torture. We then take out the tablet with his headphones so he can play his games. (The trick is not to show him this before we get on the plane). “My daughter was (and still is) a busy body, when she was young I utilized her being able to fly free under 2 (she traveled to Georgia, Florida, Jamaica and California all before 2!) I really hate connected flights, but it turned out to be a saving grace because it allowed her a chance to unwind outside of the small constraints of the plane. Big Kids<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By the time your kid is five, it has likely gotten much easier to travel with them. It is kind of a trade off. Will you really be able to have a drama free and<\/span><\/strong> fare free flight with those infants and toddlers? Maybe. Now that you are paying? It isn\u2019t nearly as difficult. We have to pay one way or another, right?<\/p>\n

For your big kids don\u2019t forget:<\/p>\n

TRAVEL DIARY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bring a travel diary, crayons, and several pens \u2013 at this age, your kids have likely mastered talking, and will want to share that mastery with EVERYONE on the flight. Just remind them to just write down what they have to say.<\/p>\n

HEADPHONES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Headphones are great, but be sure that they have a built in volume control to protect their hearing. (Amazon affiliate links)<\/p>\n

DISPOSABLE CAMERA<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The last thing you need is to lose your nice digital camera or phone (which is probably full of really important photos) because your big kid wants to take photos on their own.<\/strong> Grab several disposable cameras. Encourage them to be careful and get the best photo the first time, since the number of exposures is limited. Photos will be a great post trip addition to a vacation scrap book or travel journal.<\/p>\n

“If you are an \u201canti-electronic device\u201d parent, for the sake of your fellow passengers, you may want to give in for the flight. When we traveled with the young ones, the portable DVD player was our best friend. When their interests began to diverge we bought a second player. This is also useful on flights where they may play a movie that is borderline in its appropriateness for younger viewers. Yes, you even have to be prepared when traveling with your teen. If you have a \u201cconnected\u201d teen, not being able to stay plugged in could be the source of some serious whining. No parent, after spending serious cash on a trip for a teen, wants to hear a single complaint.<\/p>\n

IN FLIGHT WI-FI<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most flights these days come with wifi, but it isn\u2019t free depending on the airline. For domestic flights, you can save big when you buy before you fly with Gogo inflight, which can be found on American, Alaskan, United, Air Canada, and Virgin America. You can get a pass that is good for 24 hours for around $8 for smartphones and ipads so that your teen can post selfies on Instagram, give a play by play on snapchat, and make funny Vines \u2013 if that is still a thing?<\/strong> A few airlines offer wifi on international flights, depending on the plane. Check before you fly so that they can download their favorite movies and games before take off \u2013 just in case.<\/p>\n

A BRAND NEW BOOK<\/strong><\/p>\n

I rarely volunteered to read as a teen. I felt like I was reading all the time for school, so for me, a good time was NOT reading. On my first solo flight at 16, I bought my first book that I didn\u2019t HAVE to read in the airport gift shop. It was wonderful. Of course this was way before inflight wi-fi, so it was either that or whatever movie was playing. Even though a flight advertises wifi, it is possible for it not to be working, for electronic devices to not be charged, and for there to be no outlets available. You can\u2019t go wrong with a good book.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The only thing teenagers like to do more than eat and text is sleep.<\/strong> A tired teen is almost as bad as a tired\u2026 well\u2026 anybody. No one is at their best when they are tired, and by the time they are teenagers, they are carrying extra bags, there\u2019s no stroller for them when they are tired, and you are probably unwilling to carry them. So when they get on the plane, they may want to skip the social media altogether and take a nap.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, I go on vacations alone if I really want to vacation. Airlines have us paying for just about everything these days, and the small package of pretzels is quickly becoming a thing of the past. <\/strong>Always pack snacks. When it comes to drinks, you can bring an empty sippy cup for your little ones and a cup with a lid for your big kids and pray that the cart still has juice or water available IF it comes down the aisle at all, but whatever you do\u2026<\/p>\n

Yes it\u2019s expensive and it\u2019s a pain but it\u2019s better than having to throw away the juice boxes you bought that were poked open by the TSA agent.” ~ Karla, Traveled with kids to Barbados and Grenada. There you have it – tips from some of the smartest Caribbean moms that we know. <\/strong>One thing that we know about West Indian moms is that we love to pack food, don\u2019t take kindly to bad behavior by our kids in public, are all about comfort, and can be extremely resourceful. These days, not even \u201cthe look\u201d works 100% of the time, so we must mix modern technology with old school preparedness. So, ARE Caribbean children the best behaved children in the air?<\/strong> I have been on some flights with some little Caribbean terrors, so from my not so scientific assessment, kids are kids, no matter where they come from. However, c<\/strong>omfortable, occupied kids and good behavior go hand in hand. <\/strong>If you are striving to be that mom with the most well behaved kids on the flight, remember\u2026<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve been on a long trip consisting of multiple arrivals and departures. You consider it a win if you just didn\u2019t drop the last clean pacifier, or lose your little one\u2019s num num (blanket, bunny, insert \u201ccan\u2019t exist without it\u201d item here) between flights. As you drag yourself, your bags, and your offspring off of the plane to baggage claim, a couple approaches you and tells you that they have been watching you and your kids, and how wonderful it was to be on a flight with such well behaved children. You breathe a sigh of relief and a \u201cthank you\u201d that doesn\u2019t sound half as grateful for the compliment as you wanted to sound, and limp on to customs. Or maybe you don\u2019t know the drill. Maybe you have the kids that can tear a plane UP and make passengers wish that they had a pilot\u2019s license so that they would never have to fly with your children again\u2026 or any children for that matter. Maybe your kids are the ones incessantly kicking the seats in front of them, or dangling themselves over the back of their seats, staring at, or worse, talking to the passengers behind them\u2026 sharing your age, details about your dating life, or even better, where babies come from. Is your baby the one who just screams for no reason, falls asleep, then wakes up screaming just as the other passengers, and you, have drifted off to sleep? My parents were having no in-flight foolishness. They packed food, blankets, and made sure we stayed occupied. Other than that? Threats. I don't remember verbal threats, but threatening looks? Plenty. Today, we can't (and don't have to) rely solely on \"the look.\" We don\u2019t all get it right the first time. At one time or another we\u2019ve probably all had that kid that we\u2019ve had to apologize for.
