I am not a huge Mother\u2019s Day fan.<\/strong> Yes, I am a mom. Yes, I have a mom. I have a mother-in-law too. Still not a fan. Let me clarify. I am not a fan of it in its current construction.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all \u2013 it is on a Sunday<\/strong>. That means church for a lot of us. What is required for church? Getting kids ready for church. What is that? Work. What is the last thing I want to do on a day that everyone is telling me is MY day? Work.\u00a0 I should be able to choose the best day for Mother\u2019s Day according to my preference and level of exhaustion.<\/p>\n

Mother\u2019s day lunch, brunch, dinner in any form? No thanks.<\/strong> Why? I am glad that you asked.\u00a0 If we eat at home, guess who is cooking? If I get breakfast in bed, who is responsible for the rest of the meals? Me. If we have company for dinner, who has to make sure the house is clean before and after? Me. All of that sounds like work.\u00a0 Mother\u2019s day brunches? There are so many reasons that I dislike them, so I\u2019ll just say this, those are work too. Kids spilling things, waiting in line for the coveted seafood or steak? Nah. I\u2019m good.<\/p>\n

Pedicures?<\/strong> That is often a Mother\u2019s Day gift giver\u2019s \u201cgo to\u201d gift. Did you know that we have to do a pedicure before we get a pedicure just so that the technician doesn\u2019t talk trash about our feet? Work. You know what we don\u2019t want to do on Mother\u2019s day? Work.<\/p>\n

For those of you who have moms that are difficult to read when it comes to Mother\u2019s day gifts, here is my list of 7 gifts that are better than brunch on Mother\u2019s Day. These are mostly suggestions for spouses, since they are the ones with the money. <\/strong>Kids can continue to give macaroni necklaces and breakfast in bed. Either way, just let them sign the card\u2026 we like that.<\/p>\n

Jewelry <\/strong>\u2013 I shouldn\u2019t have to explain this. Everybody likes shiny pretty things. Moms are no exception. We like jewelry. It doesn\u2019t have to be expensive. You can do a gift card to a jewelry store too. We are a sucker for things with our kids names on \u2018em. How can you be mad at that gift? You can\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Business Tools<\/strong> – If your wife or mom is in business, skip brunch and get her the camera, or accessories, subscription to lead generation service, stationary, banner, conference registration, or any other tools that will help her realize her dreams. A happy mom is a good mom. If being a business woman is her idea of happiness, your support will mean a great deal. If you are a husband reading this, your kids should see you supporting their mom. You have no idea how much that will change their lives and shape their attitudes when it is their turn to support their spouse.<\/p>\n

Food<\/strong> \u2013 When I say food here, I don\u2019t mean a meal. We all have something that we love to eat – that we wish was all ours with no little fingers trying to sneak a taste, or big soupy eyes asking for some. Technically, if they ask properly, I don\u2019t think you can refuse your kids food unless it is for good cause – like they are allergic to it \u2013 then shame on you for eating it (just a little mom-guilt humor). So if there is something you know she loves, get her that and either get the kids their own or tell them not to even think about asking mom for some. It is hers and hers alone.<\/p>\n

Spa<\/strong> \u2013 Personally, I am not a fan of going to the spa. Now just to be clear, I have never gone to the spa and not had a wonderful time. I just have anxiety about going.\u00a0 Also, I want to go when I want to go (which is kinda never) so if you choose to give her a spa day, make sure that she can choose the day. We have \u201clady issues\u201d that rule out certain days of the month, so if you don\u2019t have a calendar that you use to keep track of these things (even that could be wrong), picking a day could be a bad idea.\u00a0 If you want to let her treat herself to a spa day at home, that is a great idea. Put together a basket with wine or sparkling cider, aromatherapy candles, and body scrubs.\u00a0 That\u2019s only two stores, unless you find one that sells spa stuff and wine \u2013 and if you do, please let me know. They deserve my business.<\/p>\n

Staycation<\/strong> \u2013 if you are an avid blog reader, you have probably learned of the power of the staycation. If not, let me first tell you what it is\u2026 in a word\u2026 heaven. It is when you leave the dishes, laundry, and vacuuming behind, and run away, just a few miles away usually, to a hotel with great amenities like a pool and daily maid service. You can see where I am going with this, right? Right. Get her a nice suite with a great big bed and cable in a hotel with a pool and Wi-Fi. Stock the fridge with a weekend\u2019s worth of her favorite foods and snacks, and be out. If it has spa services, you can throw a gift certificate in for that. Manicure is the safest bet \u2013 no calendars or pre cleaning required.<\/p>\n

Road Trip!<\/strong> \u2013 megabus.com<\/a> is celebrating their 10 year anniversary this year (read more about it here<\/a>), and did a survey of megabus.com<\/a> customers. They found that 64% miss their moms. Do you think your spouse is in that 64%? Here are three scenarios in which a road trip on megabus.com<\/a> is one of the best Mother\u2019s Day gifts you can give.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With this road trip gift, you can surprise two generations for twice as many tears of joy!<\/p>\n

3. Bring her mom to her for a shopping trip and mom\u2019s night out.<\/strong> You may have to combine some of the gifts listed above to make this a real show stopper of a Mother\u2019s Day.\u00a0 According to the megabus.com<\/a> survey, more people are planning to go home for mother\u2019s day over a spa or the beach. No matter how expensive or fancy it is, she will hate it\u2026 and you\u2026 even if she says otherwise. She is probably lying. You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n
