How My Tobagonian Dad Influenced My Decision to Go to Law School

Eva WilsonAugust 31, 2018September 4, 2023

I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer. I’ve been many things, from a social worker to a nail tech, but I STILL always wanted to be a lawyer. The first time I was absolutely sure, was after I spent a few hours in court with my dad. A young man who was on trial for possession of marijuana came to court with the actual substance in his pocket. My dad walked up to the judge, said a few words, and the guy left a free man.

Related: “Congratulations. Now you can go back to being a mom.”

I’m not sure how he did it or what he said, but that was his job. His job was to help people get another chance (whether they deserved it or not, apparently), and he got to do that every day. In this video, I talk about how Socamom and my dad helped me decide to go to law school with a husband and three kids we were homeschooling – at age 38.

It is “Fadda Friday” in our Facebook Group! Today, to welcome members, I shared what made me go to law school and how my dad and the blog had everything to do with my decision. Stay tuned at the end of the video for a clip of my dad talking about how he decided to come to the United States.
