My Best Day as a Businessmom… #blog4biz – Day 3

My best business day ever, I didn’t make a dime.

My husband stood out on the front steps with his cell phone camera aimed at the UPS truck coming slowly up our street.  He never asked me to come out, I was looking for him for something else, and that’s where I found him.  I stepped outside, and Mr. Social joined me.  The driver looked like a deer in headlights, or maybe he was wondering what he did to become a start in this show, but he drove up and hopped out to get my box without asking any questions.

I took the box inside, the hubby’s camera following my every move.  I carefully opened the box to ooooo’s and ahhhhh’s from my mom, hubby, and the kids.  My mom was on repeat. “Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!” So were the kids. “Oh wow, Mommy! It’s beautiful!” The hubby tried to catch it all on film.

“Sign mine first!” squealed Baby Girl.

“No mine,” responded my oldest. “I was here first. I’m her FIRST child.”

“Allyuh move aside! I’m gettin’ mine signed furs!” That was my mom. She meant that.

They lined up in front of me, and I sat on the couch – I signed one for each of them, while the hubby caught it all.  The two youngest ran off to read it, Ma made a list of the copies she’d need to take to St. Vincent with her, and my oldest just sat.

“I’m jealous,” he announced.  “You beat me to it, but I’ll get my book too – you just watch.”

“You know how old I am? You have plenty of time – especially since you are starting now.  You will beat me – by the time you are my age, you definitely will be way past your FIRST book.”

“Oh yeeeeaaaaahhhh,” he said, calculating his age and making plans. “I do have a head start, don’t I?”

As a business woman and a mom, there is nothing more satisfying to me than inspiring my children to follow their passions, and make a living doing something that they love. We don’t realize how much our kids compare themselves to us – not just our physical features or personalities, but our ambitions, goals, occupations, and accomplishments.

The day I got my first copies of Anancy’s Family Reunion in the mail, I didn’t make a dime – but I was able to show my kids that anything is possible.  The day that seed of entrepreneurship was planted in my kids was my best business day ever.
