Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887. He was an activist, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator from Jamaica. Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, African Communities League, and the Black Star Line shipping company. Garvey advanced a Pan-African philosophy inspiring Garveyism, a global movement. The Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement were inspired by Garvey's philosophy. He died on June 10, 1940.
