Just One Mile: Gentrification in Congress Heights, DC

More Questions, Less Answers

So I am still left with the same questions. What does gentrification really look like? Is it when the white people move in? It doesn’t seem like that is the only sign. Is it when the coffee shops come? Is it when the recreation centers get upgraded? What about when the schools get rebuilt? Is it still a white woman pushing a stroller or jogging? If this is not gentrification then who is all of this for? Maybe I am pessimistic, but I have a hard time believing that this is for “us.” What does a gentrifier look like? Maybe it looks like me. Maybe I have no right to get upset at the changes and what seems like the inevitable exploitation, because I was one of the warning shots.
