Opening Today: Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green #movie #review

The kids were still enjoying their vacation with family – I was fresh off of my trip to BlogHer in NYC, and the hubby was fresh off the golf course when we went to the screening of Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green (that is what he does when we are all away – eats over at my cousin’s house, sleeps in front of a game of Madden, and plays golf… a lot).

We were finally going to have a little date night, so we met in Chinatown.

You know what? I really didn’t plan on having any kids.  I figured I would concentrate on my career, and adopt a kid later on, so that I would have someone to pass my “stuff” on to.  I didn’t know I wanted kids until I had them.  That first moment after I found out I was pregnant was a blur… but that second moment – amazing.  I started thinking about who it would be, what it would be, and how much of me, it would be.

I went straight over to my best friend’s house, and we started brainstorming about how wonderful he or she could be – would be.  It was spectacular.  Each time I got pregnant, so it went.  The hubby and I would talk about all the cool things that we would do with them, what talents they could possibly have, and how we would do everything right. I still look at them with amazement and wonder (most days, anyway) and think about what they will be like when they grow up – and how wrong we get it sometimes.

Academy Award®–nominated director/writer Peter Hedges (“Dan in Real Life,” What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”) brings enchantment to the screen with “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” It’s the inspiring, magical story of a happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim—and their small town of Stanleyville—learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. – From Disney.com/oddlife

We both enjoyed the movie.  There were plenty of funny moments, and a couple of weepy ones – but overall – we had a good time watching it.

Bottom Line – should you go see it?

Sure.  It does have some nice special effects, so you can see it on a big screen or not – either way, you’ll be fine.  If you are not in the mood to cry a little – skip it.  If you are looking for big, big laughs – they aren’t here.  It is a NICE movie.  The ending is all wrapped up in a pretty bow, and a lot of parts were predictable.  That being said – I still had a good time, and there were a couple of scenes that I didn’t see coming.  Common is pretty funny – but honestly, after his performance at the Hip Hop Honors in ’05, he could be on the screen playing Yahtze in a silent movie and I’d watch.

Should you take the kids?

Hmmmmm…. I would take my oldest, but not the little ones.  For kids who aren’t entirely sure where babies even come from, the infertility theme may be a bit tough to understand, and very sad for them.  There’s no talk of sex or any sexy scenes, but for my kids, infertility is a mature theme that we haven’t really talked about.  Shoot – to be honest, I haven’t talked about fertility with the babies yet – let alone infertility.  There are some fun scenes after the sad ones… but then the sadness comes back…. then a shot of happy sad… then happy.  So – know your kids.  If they are super sensitive? No.  If they are into sci-fi and fantasy… this may be a little sappy for them.

Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton, Dianne Wiest, CJ Adams, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, M. Emmet Walsh, Odeya Rush, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lois Smith, with David Morse and Common star in this dramedy directed by Peter Hedges, and produced by Ahmet Zappa (yes… brother to Dweezil), Scott Sanders, and Jim Whitaker.
