Caribbean American Heritage Month: Guess Who’s Coming to the Anancy Festival in Washington DC!

Have you registered for the Anancy Festival in Washington, DC this year? You don’t want to miss this year’s event. We have arts and crafts and giveaways, but what would an Anancy festival be without stories? Well, we’ve got stories!

For the first time, we welcome the team behind the Callaloo book series – Trinidadian-American author, Marjuan Canady and illustrator Nabeeh Bilal! They will be sharing a reading and performance from Callaloo: A Jazz Folktale and a preview of their second book Callaloo: The Legend of the Golden Coqui.

Callaloo: The Legend of the Golden Coqui follows Winston and his best friend Marisol as they adventure from New York City to Puerto Rico to free the legendary golden coqui frog trapped in El Yunque Rainforest.

Callaloo: A Jazz Folktale follows Winston, a young inner city boy from Brooklyn, NY who is instructed to get ingredients for his Aunt’s callaloo dinner when he is magically transported to the Caribbean island of Tobago. Here he encounters mythical folkloric characters that roam the island. He must find his way out of this haunting paradise to make it back home.

For the second time, we welcome author Carol Mitchell of St. Kitts and Nevis. She author of two collections, Chee Chee’s Adventures and the Caribbean Adventure series, and several other titles. Children reading these books get an engaging peek into the culture, history, and geography of the Caribbean. Carol’s focus is promoting literacy and a love of reading among all children.

Some of her popular titles are Fury on Soufriere Hills and Trapped in Dunston’s Cave.

In Trapped in Dunston’s Cave, Mark, Kyle, Ingrid and Mark’s pet monkey Chee Chee set off for a school trip to Trinidad’s Asa Wright Nature Center excited and ready for adventure. However, when Kyle disappears in the rain forest, the trip turns into a dangerous encounter with poachers who are trying to steal rare oilbirds from Dunston’s Cave.

In Fury on Soufriere Hills, when Mark, Kyle and Mark’s pet monkey Chee Chee climbed the tallest mountain in St. Kitts, they thought that was the end of their adventure. In fact, it was just the beginning. In Fury on Soufriere Hills, the two best friends are once again thrown into an exciting adventure as they travel into the past to the island of Montserrat where, with Chee Chee’s help, they must try to save the Carib people from being destroyed by a volcanic eruption.

Both authors will have books available for sale at the event and credit cards are accepted.
