I just talked to my “other mother” yesterday who owns a bridal shop in Augusta, Georgia, where I went to high school. I went to several proms including my own, and before she owned her own shop, she went with me to Macy’s to choose one of my favorites – a navy blue and white Jessica McClintock princess gown.
Being from Trinidad, my mother had no clue what prom was or how it all worked, so she gladly relinquished the control of dress shopping to me, my best friend, and my best friend’s mom.
For me, it was a given that I was going to the prom. For many girls, it isn’t that easy. With the recession just easing up (in some opinions) and money still tight for most parents, some young ladies may not be able to attend because they don’t have the formal dress that is part of the whole glamour of the evening, nor the money to buy it.
Every girl should have a moment to feel like a princess, and at several events across the country, Macy’s and non-profit organizations all over the country are hosting prom shopping events with a deejay, “sips and sweets”, and fragrance sampling. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their gently used formal dresses (let’s be honest – we only wear prom dresses once) to donate to local charities.
