The SocaMom meetup groups from Washington, DC and Brooklyn, NY were invited to join Carla Hall, Mario Batali, Clinton Kelly, Michael Symon, and Daphne Oz for a taping of ABC’s The Chew, at the studios in New York City.

Some of the ladies from the group.

The group, made up of grandmothers, seasoned moms, new moms, moms-to-be, and single ladies, from as far away as Richmond, Virginia, braved the cold, wet New York city streets to join the cast for a Cinco de Mayo celebration.

I didn’t expect my journey to be newsworthy, but Amtrak had a power outage north of Baltimore, and we were stuck for a while, and the whole thing ended up on the news. Then they decided to pull us using a diesel engine… then they had us switch trains. I was worried that the next option would be to find some coal or wood to power a steam engine to get us there.  The DC crew expected to arrive around 7:30, eat a nice leisurely breakfast, and then stroll on over to the studios – taking our sweet time.  Reality? We arrived at Penn Station at 10:20, ran for a cab, sat in traffic, and pulled up outside of the studios at exactly 10:45. There was already a line.

Some of the New York ladies were already in line, so we joined them.  I vaguely remembered seeing something on the confirmation that said VIP.  After some checking, they found our group on the VIP list, and we were ushered into the building where we went through security.

I was happy to be out of the unseasonably cold weather, but my stomach was grumbling. I really wished I had made it in time to grab some breakfast.

Chef Cherry and I at the “tasting table”!

Luckily The Chew is a cooking show, and there would be some sort of food served – or at least I could smell it and dream, right? Before we could make it all the way into the audience holding room, I was told that there was a chance that myself and another member of our group would be able to sit at the tasting table. Dreams do come true for a hungry mom who has been on a train for six hours!

The show airs on ABC at 1:00 pm EST on May 5. Check your local listings.

After the show, we walked a few blocks to get a late lunch, then took in a movie to get out of the cold and rain while we waited for our return train to DC.

Okay, so we were REALLY hungry…

A great time was had by all. If you would like to join our Brooklyn Meetup Group, or the Washington, DC area meetup group for activities and events, please do! We have events scheduled, and we would love to have you.
